Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

"We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose." - Romans 8:28

All things work for good. Paul writes this from prison. He has been shipwrecked and beaten and imprisoned multiple times by the time he puts pen to this letter. He is not describing a life where things have gone well. He is describing a conviction that holds in a life where things have not.

The pearl merchant in the Gospel sells everything for one great pearl - the parable says she has been searching, meaning she knows what she is looking for and recognizes it when she finds it. The selling is total, but it is not reluctant. Having found the one thing of true value, everything else releases more easily.

Many women who love God deeply carry a particular weight with Romans 8:28 - the things that did not work, the prayers that were not answered in the form they were offered, the losses that have not resolved into anything that looks like good. The verse can feel like pressure rather than promise, as though if you are not seeing the good, you are not trusting enough.

Sister, Paul is describing a conviction, not an emotion. He is not saying it feels good. He is saying it is going somewhere good, in the hands of the God who foreknew you. That holds even when the evidence is not yet visible.

Where in your life is Romans 8:28 hardest to believe right now? Name it specifically - not to resolve it, just to name it honestly before God. The promise does not require you to feel it to be true. Bring the specific thing and ask for the capacity to trust the destination even while the working is still invisible.

Lord, all things work for good for those who love you. I love you, and I cannot yet see the good in this specific thing. Let the foreknowing be enough to hold me. Precious Blood of Jesus, save us. Amen.
