"What more was there to do for my vineyard that I had not done?" - Isaiah 5:4
Reflection
God plants a vineyard the way a woman sets up a home for people she loves, Sister. He clears the ground, chooses the best vines, builds a tower to watch over it, digs a press before there's even fruit to press. Everything is prepared in advance, on purpose, before anyone has asked for anything. Before the question of fruit comes the fact of preparation. Something was readied for you long before you did anything with it.
You are being filled so that something can be set on the table.
The hard turn in Isaiah's song matters too. The vineyard, tended perfectly, still produces wild grapes instead of good ones. That's not a story about punishment. It's a story about the gap between effort and outcome, a gap most women know intimately from raising children who don't turn out exactly as planned, or tending relationships that don't yield what all that care seemed to deserve.
Paul's second reading gives the frame for the four weeks ahead: have no anxiety, and let your requests be made known with thanksgiving. Whatever this month uncovers about what's actually growing in you, start from gratitude for what was prepared, not from an audit of what hasn't produced yet. The landowner did everything first. The accounting comes after, not instead of, the gift.
Jesus's version of the parable ends harder, with tenants who forget whose vineyard it actually is and start treating what was leased as owned outright. It's a fair question to carry into the month: which parts of your own life, your gifts, your relationships, your body itself, have quietly started to feel like property instead of something entrusted to your care for a while.
The Challenge
Name one thing that was prepared for you long before you had any part in it, a gift, a person, a habit someone else built into your life. Thank them, or thank God, specifically and out loud today.
One Prayer
Lord of the vineyard, you prepared the ground before I ever stood on it. Let me tend what's growing with gratitude first, and honest eyes after. Amen.
You are not alone. Submit your intentions and they'll be carried to Holy Hour this Sunday.
