Paul writes to the Philippians with real confidence: "the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus." Not "you'd better finish it yourself," not a warning to try harder before it's too late. Confidence that God, who started it, will carry it through, even on the days it doesn't feel like anything is growing at all.
Hear that plainly on the next-to-last night of a month spent asking what's actually growing in your family. Whatever's still unfinished, whatever fruit hasn't shown up yet, the same God who started this good work isn't done with it, and the incompleteness itself isn't evidence that nothing real happened this October.
Today's Gospel gives a quiet companion scene: Jesus heals a man on the Sabbath in front of Pharisees and scholars of the law who are watching him carefully, waiting to see if he'll break their rule. He asks them first whether it's lawful, and they stay silent rather than answer honestly. Sometimes the good work God is doing in a family shows up exactly in the moments nobody else in the room wants to admit is actually good.
Universal Prayer
- We pray for our family, that we'd trust God to finish what he's started in us, we pray to the Lord.
- For everyone who has died, and for the souls we'll remember this week, we pray to the Lord.
- For grieving families, especially those grieving for the first time this year, we pray to the Lord.
- For the grace of confidence instead of worry about what's unfinished, we pray to the Lord.
Faith in Action
Sit down as a family and each write the names of your own dead on a slip of paper. Add them to the parish book of the dead if your church keeps one. Keep a meatless supper and offer it for them.
A Note for Parents
Ask your kids to name someone in the family who has died, even a great-grandparent they never met but have heard stories about. Tell one short story about that person if you can, something specific rather than general, since specific stories are what actually keep a memory alive across generations. Writing names down and saying them out loud is one of the oldest ways a family keeps its dead close.
It's also the last Friday of October. If your family has been keeping Friday sacrifices all month, tonight's is a fitting one to offer for someone who has died, someone named specifically rather than for "all the dead" in the abstract.
Ask, too, whether there's someone who died this past year whose absence still feels raw at this table. Let that be spoken plainly tonight if it needs to be, rather than quietly avoided the way grief sometimes gets avoided in a busy household.
