Yesterday's Reflection

Friday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time

Reflection

Paul writes with real confidence: the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus. Not a warning to finish it alone under deadline pressure. Confidence that the completion was never solely dependent on the person doing the work in the first place.

Carry that into the close of this month's professional examination. Whatever's still unfinished in your work, whatever growth hasn't shown up yet despite real effort, the incompleteness itself isn't evidence that nothing real happened this October. Growth that isn't visible yet isn't the same as growth that isn't happening.

Today's Gospel gives a quiet companion scene: Jesus heals a man on the Sabbath in front of religious leaders watching carefully to see if he'll break their rule, and asks them plainly whether it's lawful before they answer with silence rather than honesty. Sometimes the good, real work happening in a career is exactly the kind nobody in the room wants to admit is actually good, because admitting it would require changing an assessment already made.

Write one honest sentence about what this month's examination has actually shown you was growing in your professional life, separate from what you wish had grown or expected to see.

Honesty matters more than optimism in that sentence. A month spent genuinely examining a career should turn up real growth and real bare ground both, and neither one cancels the other out.

The Challenge

Write one sentence naming what genuinely grew in your work this October, separate from what you wish had grown instead. Keep the sentence somewhere you'll actually see it again in November.

One Prayer

Lord, finish what you started in me, even the parts I can't yet see clearly. Give me confidence instead of anxiety about what's unfinished. Amen.
