Yesterday's Reflection

Monday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

Reflection

Naboth's no is one of the most dignified in Scripture. He does not negotiate. He names the ground: this is my ancestral heritage. No amount of money or exchange changes the fact that this vineyard was given to his family in trust and is not his to sell. The king's desire is irrelevant to the theological reality of the inheritance.

Power that encounters a limit it cannot purchase or persuade schemes to remove the limit. Jezebel's method is the method of every corrupted authority: manufacture the accusation, find the compliant witnesses, use the law as a weapon against the person it was meant to protect. Naboth dies holding his no.

Do not resist one who is evil - not because resistance is never right, but because the turned cheek and the second mile demonstrate a freedom that violent retaliation cannot. In your twenties, learning the difference between the things that cannot be yielded and the things that can be given generously is one of the essential character projects. The Naboth-line is real. So is the second-mile freedom.

The Challenge

Name your ancestral heritage - the thing that cannot be sold. Name one Ahab-pressure trying to get you to yield it. Hold the line. And name one thing this week you can give freely, from the second-mile freedom. Do both.

One Prayer

Lord, let me know what cannot be sold and hold it. Let the giving I do be free and chosen. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in you. Amen.
