Ezekiel is given one of the stranger preaching assignments in the prophetic tradition. No speech. Pack your bags in daylight while they watch. Dig through the wall. Leave in darkness with the bundle on your shoulder and your face covered. The people have eyes that do not see and ears that do not hear. The spoken word has stopped working. What might reach them is the embodied sign - enacted in front of them, unexplained, forcing the question.

When they ask, he tells them: this oracle concerns Jerusalem. As I have done, so shall it be done to them.

The forgiveness parable follows the same logic. Peter wants to calculate the quantity. Jesus makes the quantity absurd - ten thousand talents canceled, a hundred denarii collected, the servant's hand at the throat of a man who owes him a fraction of what was given back. The calculation collapses. The servant's behavior is incoherent because he forgot, immediately and completely, what had just happened to him.

The psalmist names it as Israel's defining failure: they forgot the works of the Lord. Not apostasy in a single dramatic moment - accumulated inattention, gifts internalized until the giver disappeared. The forgetting that produces injustice is usually quiet. It happens between rooms.

The early adult years accumulate hurts at a particular rate. New friendships, new communities, new relationships - more people to be wronged by, and a shorter history of received mercy to hold against the current grievance. The practice of forgiveness depends on keeping the cancellation live. Not abstractly - naming the specific mercy received, the specific debt forgiven, and holding it beside the current complaint.

Name the person you are failing to forgive right now and the debt they owe. Then name, as specifically as you can, one mercy you have received - one specific cancellation, one grace you did not earn. Hold both. Let the ratio work on you.

Lord, let me not be the servant who forgot. Let the enormous mercy stay alive in me long enough to change how I hold the small debts. Seventy-seven times - let me stop counting. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us. Amen.
