A Pharisee is scandalized that Jesus skips a ritual washing before dinner. Jesus goes straight past the etiquette to the actual condition underneath it: you clean the outside of the cup while the inside stays full of what you'd never show anyone. It's a sharp thing to say at someone's own table, delivered without softening it.

Today is the anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima, confirmed in 1917 in front of a crowd that included skeptics specifically hoping to catch three shepherd children in a lie. What Our Lady asked of those children wasn't outward performance. It was small, consistent, largely invisible sacrifice. That pairs oddly well with today's Gospel: the visible, polished version of a life isn't what's actually being evaluated.

Most careers reward exactly the outward cup: the polished presentation, the well-managed reputation, the LinkedIn version of events. None of that is dishonest by itself. The danger is investing real effort in the outward cup while the interior, the actual character doing the work when no one's auditing it, gets far less attention than its share.

Ask plainly this week whether the effort you put into how your work is perceived matches the effort you put into how it's actually done when nobody's checking.

That gap is usually invisible to everyone except the person living inside it. Nobody else can audit the interior of the cup. Only you know honestly whether the polish matches what's underneath it.

Choose one task this week and do it with full integrity specifically in a place no one will verify or notice, as a direct check on the gap between the outward cup and what's inside it. Pick something small enough that skipping it would genuinely go unnoticed.

Lord, let what's inside match what shows. Don't let me perfect the outward cup while the interior goes untended. Amen.
