Real Talk
Today's All Saints, which sounds like a day for people who did something impressive enough to get a stained glass window. It's actually the opposite. The reading tonight is about a crowd so huge nobody could count it, made up of people who mostly nobody's ever heard of. Most saints don't have a feast day. They just showed up, stayed faithful, and that ended up being enough.
The Beatitudes get read tonight too, and they're honestly kind of a weird list if you actually look at it. Blessed are the poor in spirit. Blessed are those who mourn. None of that sounds like winning. It sounds like the opposite of what everyone's trying to project online. Jesus is describing people who've stopped performing and started just being honest about where they actually are. Try reading the list again imagining it as a highlight reel of someone's actual life instead of a caption. It doesn't work, and that's the point - none of this was ever meant to be posted.
John's letter says the real point plainly: we are God's children right now, not once we've earned it. That's not a participation trophy. It's just true, whether you feel like you deserve it tonight or not. That's actually a relief if you think about it - it means your worth isn't a constant performance review you could fail at any moment.
Your Challenge
Intellectual: Look up one saint you've never heard of who has zero fame outside their own small town or parish. Notice what actually made them a saint - it's probably not what you'd expect.
