"On these two commandments hang the whole law and the prophets." - Matthew 22:40
Reflection
Asked which commandment matters most today, Jesus names two, Sister: love God with everything, love your neighbor as yourself. Everything else, he says, hangs on those two, the way a coat hangs on two hooks instead of a hundred small ones scattered everywhere.
You are being filled so that something can be set on the table.
Exodus gives the sharpest version of the second commandment, aimed at people with no power to demand anything: the widow, the orphan, the stranger. If they cry out, God says, I will surely hear them. Love of neighbor is measured against the people least able to make you love them, not the ones it's easy to love anyway.
Everything this month has asked, about being filled, furnished, served, is meant to land here, on these two hooks. If anything you've carried this October has come loose from both love of God and real love of the people around you, notice that honestly rather than defending it as busy or productive.
Exodus doesn't leave the test abstract. God promises to hear the cry of the widow and orphan directly, personally, which means the neighbor with no leverage to demand your attention isn't a minor concern to God either. Whoever that person is for you this week, they're not a lower priority than the people who can actually advocate for themselves.
The Challenge
Name one person in your life right now with little power to demand your attention. Give it to them deliberately this week, and let it be a real conversation rather than a quick, passing gesture.
One Prayer
Lord, let everything I carry hang on these two commandments. Show me who has no one else looking out for them. Amen.
You are not alone. Submit your intentions and they'll be carried to Holy Hour this Sunday.
