Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

"After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound." - 1 Kings 19:12

Elijah expected the encounter. He stood at the entrance of the cave and experienced the wind and the earthquake and the fire - and God was not in any of them. The encounter came in the thin silence afterward, the voice of barely a sound.

Many women know the experience of waiting for God to show up in the spectacular way - the dramatic answer, the clear sign, the unmistakable voice - and instead finding something quieter. The sense of peace in the middle of a decision, not a burning bush. The verse that landed differently this time. The conversation that turned out to be the thing you needed, without anyone intending it.

Paul says he carries great sorrow and constant anguish for people he loves. He would give himself up for them if it helped. That grief does not resolve into theology. It stays as anguish, named honestly, held alongside everything else he believes.

The disciples said truly you are the Son of God in the boat, after the sinking. Not on the mountain, not at the miracle before it - in the boat, in the dark, after Peter went under and was caught and the wind died. The confession comes from people who are wet and relieved and trying to understand what just happened, in an ordinary cramped boat.

Sister, the small voice comes in the cramped ordinary places. You are probably already in one.

Where have you been waiting for the spectacular and missing the small voice that has been there? Name the ordinary place where God has actually been showing up - the voice you have dismissed as too small or too quiet to count. Let it count today.
