"On these two commandments hang the whole law and the prophets." - Matthew 22:40 Full readings at USCCB
Real Talk
Someone asks Jesus which commandment matters most, probably hoping to start an argument about religious rules. Jesus doesn't pick from a long list. He picks two: love God with everything, love your neighbor like yourself. Everything else, he says, hangs off those two, the way a coat hangs off two hooks instead of a hundred tiny ones.
That's actually a relief if you've ever felt like faith is a giant checklist you're constantly failing at. It's not actually about memorizing a hundred rules. It's about these two things, done for real.
The first reading gets specific about who counts as "neighbor," and it's not the easy answer. It names the people with the least power to demand anything from you: the outsider, the widow, the orphan. Translated to your actual life, that's the kid nobody sits with, the person who can't do anything for your social status, the one it costs you something to actually be kind to.
Everything this whole month has been asking, about faith, honesty, using your gifts, actually connects back to these two commandments. If anything you're doing has drifted away from both love of God and love of the people around you, notice that honestly rather than explaining it away as just being busy.
Your Challenge
Relational: Identify the person in your life right now with the least power to demand your attention. Give it to them anyway, on purpose, this week. Notice if it feels different from attention you give out of obligation.
One Prayer
Lord, let everything I do actually hang on these two commandments. Show me who has nobody else looking out for them. Amen.
You are not alone. Submit your intentions and they'll be carried to Holy Hour this Sunday.
