Today's Word
"What more was there to do for my vineyard that I had not done?" - Isaiah 5:4 Full readings at USCCB
Real Talk
God plants a vineyard in today's first reading and does everything right. Clears the rocks out. Plants the best vines money can buy. Builds a watchtower so nobody steals the harvest. Digs a wine press before there's even any wine to press. And after all of that? The vineyard produces garbage grapes anyway.
That's such a specific kind of frustrating. It's not "I didn't try." It's "I did everything I was supposed to do and it still didn't work the way I wanted." If you've ever studied hard for a test and still bombed it, or been a genuinely good friend to someone who ghosted you anyway, you already know this feeling from the inside.
Jesus tells basically the same story later, except this time the problem isn't the vineyard. It's the people running it, who start acting like they own the place instead of just taking care of it for someone else. That's the actual twist: it's not always about trying harder. Sometimes it's about remembering whose vineyard you're actually standing in.
Starting today, this space is going to spend the next four weeks asking one question over and over: what's actually growing in your life right now? Not what you wish was growing. What's real, right now, today.
Think about it like a group chat you've been in for years. At some point you stop noticing who actually shows up when it matters and who just likes memes. The vineyard question is basically that, applied to your whole life: who and what have you actually been tending, versus what have you just been assuming is fine because nobody's checked in a while?
Your Challenge
Relational: Text one person today and tell them one specific thing about their life that you've noticed is actually going well. Not a generic compliment. Something specific you've watched them build or work at.
One Prayer
God, some things I've worked hard at haven't turned out how I wanted. Help me remember it's your vineyard, not mine, and you're not done with it yet. Amen.
You are not alone. Submit your intentions and they'll be carried to Holy Hour this Sunday.
