"Everything is ready; come to the feast." - Matthew 22:4 Full readings at USCCB

Real Talk

A king throws a wedding banquet for his son, and the people originally invited just don't show up. Some are too busy, some straight up ignore it, a few actually attack the servants who came to invite them. So the king sends his people out into the streets to grab literally anyone they can find, good people, sketchy people, everybody, and the party fills up anyway.

The twist is what happens next. One guy gets in, no invitation history required, and then gets kicked out for not wearing a wedding garment. That sounds harsh until you get the point: he got in for free, no strings attached, and then treated the whole thing like it didn't matter once he was already inside. He showed up but didn't actually show up, if that makes sense.

That's a real thing that happens with faith, and honestly with a lot of stuff in life. You get invited into something, a friendship, a team, a faith community, no cover charge required, and then slowly stop actually engaging with it once you're comfortably in. Showing up physically isn't the same as actually being present.

Paul's second reading today talks about being content whether he has a lot or a little, because his sense of okay-ness doesn't depend on his circumstances. That's basically the wedding garment in a different outfit: it's not about earning your spot. It's about actually being present once you're there.

Most people spend way more energy trying to get invited to things than actually showing up fully once they're already in. Notice which one you actually put more effort into.

Your Challenge

Intellectual: Think of one thing you're technically part of, church, a team, a group chat, where you show up but don't actually engage. Name one specific way to actually show up this week instead of just being physically present.

One Prayer

Lord, you invited me in for free. Help me stop just standing around inside it and actually show up for real. Amen.
