Today's Readings
Read today’s readings at USCCBReflection
A woman in the crowd praises Mary for the accident of her motherhood, and Jesus redirects the compliment toward something anyone can actually do: hearing the word of God and observing it. It's a small but real reframing, moving the measure of blessedness away from circumstance and toward action available to anyone listening.
There's a professional version of the same instinct. It's easy to admire people for circumstances they didn't choose, the connections they were born into, the timing that happened to favor them, and to quietly excuse yourself from responsibility on the same grounds, attributing your own stalled progress entirely to circumstances outside your control. Some of that is genuinely true. Circumstance matters. But Jesus's redirection today points at what's actually available regardless of circumstance: hearing and doing.
Paul's first reading makes a related point about status. Through faith, there is neither slave nor free, distinctions that once determined nearly everything about a person's available options have been leveled by something available to anyone. It's worth being honest about which parts of your own career narrative lean on circumstance as an explanation, and which parts are actually about whether you've heard good counsel and acted on it.
Saturday gives a natural pause to ask what you've heard clearly this month, in a review, a piece of feedback, a mentor's advice, that you haven't yet acted on.
The gap between hearing and doing is usually where good advice quietly goes to die. It gets nodded at, appreciated, even agreed with, and then never actually changes the next decision made. Close that gap once this week, on the single piece of counsel you know was right.
The Challenge
Name one piece of professional advice or feedback you've heard clearly and not yet acted on. Take the first concrete step on it this week.
One Prayer
Lord, let me stop explaining my own inaction by circumstance alone. Give me the will to act on what I've already heard clearly. Amen.
