Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus doesn't tell you to complain about the person to someone else, or to quietly write them off and let the relationship go cold. If your brother wrongs you, he says, go to him directly - just the two of you - and say what happened.

Most households know the easier version of this - the slow freeze instead of the conversation. A comment gets made and nobody addresses it, so it just sits there, coloring every interaction after it without ever getting named. Weeks later nobody remembers exactly what started it, only that something did.

God gives Ezekiel a harder job than staying quiet: be the watchman. If you see something and say nothing, he tells him, the responsibility becomes yours too. That's not a comfortable word for a household that would rather keep the peace by avoiding the conversation. But letting something go unaddressed rarely produces peace. Usually it just buys time, and the thing left unsaid gets harder to name the longer it sits.

Paul's answer is what makes the hard conversation survivable: owe no one anything except love. Jesus isn't asking for a debate winner here - he's describing what love requires when something has gone wrong between people who are staying, who need the truth said plainly so they can keep going together.

• For our family, that we would go directly to each other instead of letting things go unsaid, we pray to the Lord.
• For the courage to warn someone we love when we see them heading somewhere harmful, we pray to the Lord.
• For every debt in our household except the one Paul says we should never stop paying - the debt of love, we pray to the Lord.
• For the grace to be reconciled quickly when a hard conversation is actually had, we pray to the Lord.

If there's a small unaddressed thing between you and someone in your household right now, say it out loud today - privately, plainly, without an audience. Not a text. A conversation.

Today's Gospel gives Jesus's actual instructions for when someone in the family has done something wrong: go to them directly first, privately. Not to a sibling. Not around them. To them.

Tonight, teach your children this pattern with something small and low-stakes - not as a lecture, as a practice. If one of them has a grievance with another, walk them through going to that person directly and saying it plainly: "when you did this, it hurt me." Model it yourself if you have something small to address with your spouse or one of the kids. The skill of going directly to a person, rather than around them, is one of the most useful things a family can practice together.
