"That you may be filled with all the fullness of God." - Ephesians 3:19
Reflection
Paul kneels and prays, Sister, that his readers would be filled with the fullness of God. Today's Gospel gives the harder companion: Jesus says he came not to establish peace but division, that even households will split over him.
You are being filled so that something can be set on the table.
That's a hard pairing, and it's honest. Real conviction sometimes costs a relationship before it gives anything back, a friendship that goes cold, a family gathering that gets tense because you wouldn't stay quiet. Today's also the anniversary of Saint John Paul II's papal inauguration, when he told a crowd, "Be not afraid," as a young pope who knew what real fear and real courage actually cost.
Fear shows up smaller in most homes: the honest word withheld to keep the peace, the boundary softened because holding it felt like too much conflict for one more day. Name one place you've gone quiet specifically to avoid the fire Jesus is talking about, and ask what it would cost to be filled instead with his fullness, even at the price of some discomfort.
Most women have been taught, in one way or another, that keeping the peace is a kind of holiness in itself. Today's readings complicate that. Real peace and real conviction aren't always the same thing, and sometimes choosing conviction costs the peace on purpose, for something worth more than the smoothness it disturbs.
The Challenge
Say the true thing you've been softening, plainly and kindly, to the person it actually needs to reach.
One Prayer
Lord, fill me with your fullness instead of the fear that keeps me quiet. Give me courage for what it costs. Amen.
