Reflection

A father asks two sons to go work in the vineyard. The first says no, and later goes anyway. The second says yes, sir, and never shows up. Jesus asks the religious leaders which son actually did his father's will, and the answer is obvious enough that even they say it out loud: the first one. The son who said no and changed his mind beats the son who said yes and never meant it.

That is the whole month's vineyard parables closing on the same note they opened on. Three Sundays in a row now, Jesus has told a story about someone settling accounts in a vineyard - a servant forgiven an impossible debt, workers paid the same wage regardless of when they started, and today, two sons whose actual behavior mattered more than their words at the door. Every one of these stories cares more about what actually happened than about what was promised or expected.

Ezekiel gives the reading underneath all three. People complain that God's way is not fair, and God answers that a man who turns from wickedness to justice will live, and a man who turns from virtue to wickedness will not - not because God changes his mind about them, but because the turning itself is the actual measure. Nobody is locked permanently into their first answer. The son who said no was not disqualified by having said it. What mattered was that he went.

Universal Prayer

  • For our family, that our actions would match our words, and when they don't, that we would be like the first son and go anyway, we pray to the Lord.
  • For everyone who said yes to something and never followed through, that they would find the grace to actually go, we pray to the Lord.
  • For the humility Paul describes today - regarding others as more important than ourselves, we pray to the Lord.
  • For all who feel it is too late to turn toward what is right, that Ezekiel's promise would give them hope, we pray to the Lord.

Faith in Action

At Sunday dinner, have each person name one thing they said they would do this week and didn't, without excuses. Then have them name one specific time this week they will actually do it.

A Note for Parents

This Gospel is easy for children to understand because they've all been both sons at different times - the one who grumbles and then helps anyway, and the one who agrees cheerfully and then quietly never follows through. Ask them honestly which one they've been more often this month, and let the answer be uncomfortable if it needs to be.

Today's second reading is the same hymn from Philippians the family heard two weeks ago on the Exaltation of the Holy Cross - he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave. Point that out to your children directly. The Church chose to close this stretch of the month with the same passage that opened it, and that repetition is deliberate.
