"I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!" - Luke 12:49
Reflection
Nobody reads this one at a funeral. Jesus says he came to bring not peace but division, that households will split three against two, a father against a son, a mother against a daughter. That's a hard thing to hear from the man who is also called the Prince of Peace.
Paul, a few verses earlier, prays a different-sounding prayer for the same readers. That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, rooted and grounded in love, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Both readings are true on the same day. The fire that fills a man with love is often the same fire that sets him apart from people who are content with less.
A steward's loyalty to what he's entrusted with will cost him some easy peace along the way.
I've watched men soften a real conviction into a maybe, brother, because keeping it sharp would have caused friction at a dinner table. It buys a quiet evening. It also lets the fire go out one degree at a time. Pruning isn't only cutting away what shouldn't be there. Sometimes it's refusing to trim the one branch that's actually producing, because a full branch draws more attention than an empty one.
The Challenge
Name one conviction you've softened lately to avoid friction, at home, at work, or with a friend. Say the real version of it out loud to one person this week, kindly and plainly, without apologizing for having it.
One Prayer
Lord, I've traded fire for quiet more than once. Fill me with the fullness Paul prayed for, and let me carry the cost of it. Amen.
Forged, Not Found
