Reflection

Today's readings invite us to consider where we dwell - and with whom. Jesus leaves Nazareth and settles in Capernaum, fulfilling the prophecy that light would shine on those in darkness. Meanwhile, St. Paul pleads with the Corinthians to end their divisions and be "united in the same mind and in the same purpose."

For married couples, this is a good day to ask: Where have we settled? Not geographically, but spiritually and emotionally. Have we made our home a place where light shines, or have small divisions crept in - "I belong to this approach, you belong to that one"? The domestic church thrives when husband and wife speak the same language of faith, even when they bring different gifts and perspectives.

For families with children, notice how Jesus calls the disciples in pairs of brothers - Peter and Andrew, James and John. Siblings who fish together, work together, and now follow together. What might your children accomplish if they learned to see each other as partners in mission rather than competitors?

Universal Prayer for the Domestic Church

As a family, pray together:

  • For our marriage: That we may be united in mind and purpose, setting aside small divisions for the sake of our shared vocation. Lord, hear our prayer.

  • For our children: That they may recognize the light of Christ in their lives and have the courage to follow when He calls. Lord, hear our prayer.

  • For those in darkness: For family members, neighbors, and friends who are struggling - that our home may be a place where they encounter Christ's light. Lord, hear our prayer.

Faith in Action

This is the Sunday of the Word of God, established by Pope Francis. Choose one way to honor Sacred Scripture in your home today:

  • Enthrone the family Bible in a place of honor and light a candle beside it
  • Read the Gospel aloud together after Sunday dinner
  • Ask each family member to share a favorite Scripture verse and why it matters to them
  • Begin (or continue) reading a book of the Bible together as a family this week

A Note for Parents

The Holy Name of Jesus - this month's devotion - offers a simple practice for young children: teaching them to bow their heads slightly when they hear the name "Jesus" at Mass or in prayer. This small physical gesture plants a seed of reverence that can last a lifetime. Practice it together this week.

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.”

— Isaiah 9:1
