The parable of the sower is often taught as a diagnostic about the listener, and it is that. But read as a description of effort over time, it also says something specific to anyone early enough in a career or a project to be frustrated that results aren't showing up yet. The seed on the good soil doesn't produce a hundredfold immediately. Luke's version specifies exactly what the good soil does differently: it bears fruit through perseverance. Not talent, not better conditions, not faster growth. Persistence over a timeline the sower doesn't control.

That cuts against most of what gets rewarded in the short term professionally - visible wins, quick iteration, results you can put on a slide this quarter. There's nothing wrong with wanting those. But some of the most consequential work - the reputation you're building, the skill you're actually developing, the trust you're accumulating with people who will matter in ten years - runs on a different clock entirely, one closer to the parable's than to a sprint's.

Paul's reading tonight makes the same point in a more extreme register. What is sown does not come to life unless it dies first. It is sown in weakness, raised in power. If you want the strongest possible version of an idea, a skill, or a relationship, there's usually an unglamorous period where it looks like it's failing or going nowhere - the version of the work that gets buried before anything visible comes up. Most people quit during exactly that stretch, because it doesn't look like progress. It looks like nothing.

Identify one thing you're currently doing that has produced no visible result yet, and that you've been quietly tempted to abandon because of that. Do the work again this week specifically because it hasn't shown results - not despite that.

Lord, I want proof of growth before the growing is finished. Teach me to keep showing up during the part that looks like nothing is happening. Amen.
