"But as for that in the good soil, these are the ones who, when they hear the word, embrace it with a generous and good heart, and bear fruit through perseverance." - Luke 8:15

Sister, no sorrow is assigned to today - the devotion has its own rhythm this week, and today it steps back to let the ordinary readings speak. What they speak about is soil, and patience, and a harvest that takes its time.

The parable names four kinds of ground, and only the last one produces anything. What separates it from the other three is not that it received better seed. Everyone in the parable receives the same word. What the good soil does is hold it - through perseverance, Luke says, which is a less dramatic word than most translations reach for. Not a single moment of receptivity. A sustained, unglamorous willingness to keep holding what was planted, season after season, long enough for it to actually mature.

That is close to the actual work of raising anything - a child, a habit in a household, a faith passed down. None of it produces a hundredfold overnight. It is planted, and then it is tended through years where nothing visible seems to be happening, and only much later does anyone see what it grew into. Paul's image tonight belongs beside it: what is sown does not come to life unless it dies first. A bare kernel goes into the ground looking like nothing, and what eventually rises is unrecognizable from what went in - not because it was replaced, but because it was transformed by exactly the years it spent invisible underground.

If you have ever wondered whether the quiet, repetitive, thankless parts of caring for someone actually amount to anything, tonight's readings answer plainly. The path, the rock, and the thorns all fail for different reasons, but the good soil succeeds for only one: it did not let go. Whatever you are holding right now that has shown no visible fruit yet, holding it is the actual work. The harvest was never promised on your timeline.

Name one thing you have been holding - a habit in someone you love, a hope, a patient effort - that has shown no fruit yet. Tonight, simply recommit to holding it, without demanding to see the harvest.

Lord, I want to see results before the seed has finished doing its invisible work underground. Give me the good soil's patience - to hold what you have planted in me and through me, for as long as it takes to bear fruit. Amen.
