Three great calls to mission: Isaiah sees the Lord in the temple and responds, "Here I am; send me!" Paul recounts how the risen Christ appeared to him, "last of all, as to one born abnormally." Peter, after a miraculous catch of fish, falls at Jesus' knees and says, "Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man."
All three felt unworthy. Isaiah: "I am a man of unclean lips." Paul: "I am not fit to be called an apostle." Peter: "I am a sinful man." Yet all three were called precisely in their unworthiness.
For families, this is liberating. God doesn't call the qualified; He qualifies the called. Your family's imperfections don't disqualify you from mission. "Put out into deep water" - the invitation stands.
Universal Prayer for the Domestic Church
As a family, pray together:
-
For courage to respond: When You call, may we say, "Here I am; send me." Lord, hear our prayer.
-
For humility: Keep us from thinking ourselves either too good or too sinful for Your purposes. Lord, hear our prayer.
-
For those discerning vocation: Young people seeking to know Your will - guide them. Lord, hear our prayer.
Faith in Action
Peter left everything and followed Jesus. Isaiah volunteered for an unknown mission. Paul received a mission he didn't seek.
- Discuss as a family: What is God calling us to, together and individually?
- "Put out into deep water" - Where is Jesus inviting you beyond your comfort zone?
- Make space for discernment: silence, prayer, listening
A Note for Parents
Peter's catch was so large his nets were tearing. God's provision often exceeds our expectations. When you follow in faith, don't be surprised by abundance. But also don't be surprised if following means leaving everything behind. Both are part of discipleship.
“Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.”
— Luke 5:4
