Yesterday's Reflection

Friday of the Fifth Week of Easter

Reflection

The psalm tonight is a dawn psalm: my heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and chant praise. Awake, O my soul; awake, lyre and harp - I will wake the dawn. The psalmist does not wait for the dawn to bring steadfastness. The steadfast heart wakes the dawn. The song precedes the light, and the light comes because the song has already started.

Jesus says tonight: I no longer call you slaves. I call you friends. The difference is knowledge: the slave does not know what the master is doing; the friend has been told everything. You have spent a lifetime being told. The Scripture heard at Mass, the prayers in the dark, the moments of grace that arrived without announcement and changed something quietly - all of it has been Jesus telling you what he heard from the Father. You are more deeply befriended than you may realize.

It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you. Looking back across a long life, that sentence rearranges what might have looked like a series of your own decisions. The movements toward faith, the returns after wandering, the moment of genuine conversion that happened before you knew to call it that - he was choosing you in all of it. The fruit you have borne has remained because he appointed you to bear it. The choosing was his from the beginning.

The Rosary Today

The Sorrowful Mysteries walk the passion of the friend who laid down his life - no greater love than this. Pray them tonight with the knowledge that the one who chose you and appointed you is the same one who went to the cross before you knew to be grateful. The steadfast heart wakes the dawn and prays the mysteries of the one who loved first.

Prayer of the Faithful

  • For those in the evening of life who can look back and see the choosing - the moments when Christ's initiative is clearer than their own - that they would receive the designation with gratitude: friend, not slave, we pray to the Lord.
  • For those whose peace has been disturbed by voices without mandate, that the Council's remedy would reach them: the decision of the Holy Spirit is minimal necessities and no more, we pray to the Lord.
  • For fruit that will remain - the faith formed across a lifetime, the love practiced until it became the shape of a life - that it would outlast the one who bore it and continue into the generation ahead, we pray to the Lord.

Something to Do

My heart is steadfast - I will wake the dawn. Tonight, before sleep, set an intention for tomorrow morning: one act of praise before the day begins. A psalm, a Hail Mary, a moment of thanksgiving before the demands arrive. The steadfast heart does not wait for conditions to improve before it sings. It wakes the dawn.
