Reflection

He saw and believed. The beloved disciple enters the empty tomb, sees the folded burial cloths, and believes. No vision. No angel. Just absence - the right kind of absence. The absence that means presence somewhere else. He is not here. He is risen.

In the evening of life, you have believed without seeing for a very long time. You have carried this faith through joy and suffering, through doubt and certainty, through the long middle years and into the evening. Today the Church says: your faith was not in vain. The tomb is empty. Death lost. The one you have followed your whole life is alive.

Paul says: if you were raised with Christ, seek what is above. Your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ your life appears, you too will appear with him in glory. That appearance is coming. The evening of life is not the end. It is the threshold.

At nightfall, weeping enters in, but with the dawn, rejoicing. The dawn is here. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Prayer of the Faithful

For the Church on Easter morning: that the Alleluia would ring from every church, every home, every heart. We pray to the Lord.

For those in the evening of life: that the empty tomb would be their sure and certain hope - death is not the last word, and the dawn is coming. We pray to the Lord.

For the faithful departed: Christ is risen. And so shall they be. Alleluia. We pray to the Lord.

Something to Do

Happy Easter. Say it out loud. Say it to everyone you meet. He is risen. He is truly risen. Then feast. The fast is over. The dawn has come. Alleluia.

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.”

— Psalm 118:24
