Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

A landowner hires workers all day long - some at dawn, some at nine, some at noon, some literally an hour before quitting time - and pays every single one the exact same amount. The people who worked all day are livid. Honestly? Your gut probably agrees with them a little. That's the point. Jesus wants you to feel the "that's not fair" reaction before he messes with it.

The owner's response isn't "actually you're wrong, math-wise." He doesn't argue the numbers. He asks: are you envious because I am generous? That's a completely different question. Nobody got shorted. The guy who worked twelve hours got exactly what he agreed to. What ruined his day was watching someone else get the same thing for less work.

The real question underneath "that's not fair" is usually not actually about fairness. It's about whether you can be happy for someone else's good thing without needing it to cost you something. Think about the last time someone got something you wanted - a spot on the team, a relationship, forgiveness for something you'd never have forgiven yourself for. Did it feel like they took something from you? That's the evil-eye thing this parable is naming. Their good thing wasn't your loss. It just felt like it.
