Today's Readings

Paul writes from prison, genuinely uncertain whether he'd rather live or die, both options good to him for different reasons. He resolves it by choosing to stay for the sake of people who still need him, not because staying is the easier or more comfortable option.
Today's Gospel ends with Jesus watching guests maneuver for the seats of honor at a banquet, and telling them instead to take the lowest place, let the host invite them up rather than claiming status for themselves. It's a pointed image to close the month on, since so much of professional life runs on exactly the opposite instinct: position yourself for visibility, claim the seat before someone else does.
The lowest place isn't about false modesty. It's about trusting that genuine value gets recognized without needing to be aggressively claimed in advance, and that a career built on constantly maneuvering for position is a harder, less stable thing to sustain than one built on doing work worth noticing and letting the noticing happen on its own timeline.
Whatever this October showed you, both about where you've quietly taken the seat of honor before it was offered, and where real, unclaimed growth actually happened, bring the whole of it into November honestly rather than editing it into a cleaner story.
The Challenge
Name one place this week where you claimed the seat of honor before it was offered. Take the lower seat once, deliberately, and notice what it actually costs you, and whether the cost was as high as you expected.
One Prayer
Lord, let me trust that genuine value doesn't need to be claimed in advance. Whether I live or die, let it be for the people who need what I do, not for the seat itself. Amen.
