Today's Readings

The seventy-two come back from their first assignment with results. Even the demons are subject to us. They are excited, and they have every right to be. It is the report anyone would want to give at the end of a first big project.
Jesus does not deny the results. He redirects the joy. Do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven. Success is real, and it is not the source of your worth. Your name is already written somewhere that no quarter can change.
That matters at a stage when so much is being measured. Early in a career, you receive a steady stream of information about how you are doing. Reviews, titles, offers, who got promoted. Each piece feels like a verdict on you. Jesus is saying the verdict came earlier, and it was favorable.
This does not mean the work does not matter. The disciples did the work and did it well. What changes is what you rely on when it goes badly. A person whose worth rests on the results is one bad quarter from a crisis. A person whose name is written in heaven can lose a project and stay steady.
Job's ending has the same logic. After all he lost, God restored him. It did not depend on how well he had performed in the storm.
The Challenge
Write down the last piece of work you were proud of. Then write one sentence that begins "My name is written in heaven, so I do not need this to prove that." Keep the note where you keep your performance goals.
One Prayer
Lord, I like being good at things. Keep me from resting my worth on them, and remind me that my name was written before I did any of it. Amen.
