The disciple in today's Gospel is handed a life-altering responsibility at the least convenient moment available. He is watching his teacher die, most of his friends have already fled, and everything he reorganized his twenties around is ending in front of him. Into that, Jesus gives him a mother to care for.

John's response is recorded in one clause. From that hour the disciple took her into his home. He did not take a season to recover first. He did not wait until his own situation had resolved into something stable enough to add to. He absorbed a permanent obligation in the middle of the worst week of his life, and the Gospel treats this as unremarkable enough to mention in passing.

That timing runs against a reasonable assumption most people carry through this decade: that obligations get taken on once the foundation is set. After the job stabilizes, after the debt clears, after the relationship is settled, after there is margin. It is a sensible sequence and it almost never arrives in that order. The aging parent, the sibling who needs somewhere to stay, the friend who is not okay, the child who comes earlier than planned - these show up during, not after.

Paul's reading names what that produces. You are Christ's body, and individually parts of it. He is describing an arrangement where nobody is a self-contained unit, which is precisely what a decade spent building independence trains you against. Independence is worth having and it is not the destination. The Gospel today began the Church with two people being made responsible for each other by someone who had nothing left to give them but that.

Name one responsibility you have been postponing until your own life is more settled. Ask honestly whether the settling you are waiting for is likely to arrive. Then take one concrete step into that responsibility this week, before the conditions are right.

Lord, I keep planning to be generous later, once I am steady. John took her home from that hour, with nothing steady about his life at all. Give me his timing rather than mine. Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us. Amen.
