Paul's directness in this passage is almost startling next to how carefully most communities - religious or otherwise - tend to handle conflict now. Something genuinely harmful was happening in Corinth, and rather than address it, the community had developed a kind of pride about their own tolerance of it. Paul's response reads less like cruelty than grief that they weren't grieving: should you not rather have been sorrowful?

There's a real tension here worth sitting with honestly, especially in your twenties and thirties, when a premium gets placed on being nonjudgmental, easygoing, accepting of whatever a friend or roommate or partner is doing without much pushback. That instinct comes from a good place - nobody wants to be self-righteous or controlling. But Paul names a real cost to it: a little yeast leavens all the dough. Tolerating something seriously wrong out of a desire to avoid conflict doesn't keep the peace. It just lets the thing keep working, unaddressed, until it's shaped everything around it.

The Gospel offers the other half of the same courage. Jesus heals a man's hand in front of people specifically hoping to catch him doing wrong. He doesn't wait for a safer audience. He does the good thing in the room he's actually in, cost included.

Identify one situation in your own life - a friendship, a living situation, a pattern you've been part of - where you've stayed quiet to avoid conflict, even though something about it felt genuinely wrong. Take one small, honest step toward naming it today.

Lord, I've mistaken staying quiet for kindness more times than I'd like to admit. Give me Paul's honesty and Jesus's courage - to name what's wrong, and to do what's right, regardless of who's in the room or what it costs me. Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us. Amen.
