Paul's line settles an argument that shows up constantly in your twenties and thirties, even if it never gets phrased in exactly these terms: whose spiritual life is further along, whose faith looks more impressive, who seems to have arrived somewhere you haven't. I planted, Apollos watered, but God caused the growth - and Paul's whole point is that the comparison was never the right question to begin with.

This is a hard thing to sit with in a decade built almost entirely around visible progress. You get the degree, then the job, then the next job, and each step is legible - you can point to it, measure it, put it on a resume. Faith doesn't hand you that kind of evidence on any predictable schedule. You can do the planting and the watering faithfully for years and have nothing to show for it that you can point to, while someone else's faith looks, from the outside, further along.

Paul's answer isn't that the visible stuff doesn't matter, but that the growth was never yours to produce or measure in the first place. You are God's field, he says - not your own project, not something you're building toward a deadline. The steward's job is to plant and water, faithfully, without needing to see the harvest to know the work was real.

In the Gospel, Jesus heals Simon's mother-in-law and moves on before dawn to the next town, because - he says plainly - that's what he was sent to do. He doesn't linger to watch the effects of what he's already done. He plants and moves. The growing isn't his either, in the sense of something he has to stay and supervise.

Name one area of your life where you've been quietly comparing your progress to someone else's - spiritually, vocationally, in a relationship. Today, do the actual planting or watering that's yours to do in that area, and let go of checking whether it's growing yet.

Lord, I've spent a long time measuring myself against people who seem further along, in a life built for measuring things. I plant, I water. The growth is yours, on your schedule, and I don't get to see most of it. That's enough. Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us. Amen.
