Jesus tells the crowd they're skilled at reading the weather but blind to their own moment. Settle the matter on the way, he says, before it costs far more than it would have cost to resolve it now. Paul's first reading gives the tone that makes settling possible without cruelty: bear with one another through love.

Most workplaces have their own version of a debt left unsettled: the tension with a colleague that's easier to let sit than address directly, the piece of feedback that's easier to route through someone else than deliver yourself, the honest conversation about a working relationship that keeps getting postponed for a more convenient week that never actually arrives.

Jesus's advice is uncomfortable and practical at once. The cost of delay is almost never smaller than the cost of an honest conversation now. Paul's line about bearing with one another isn't in tension with that. It's what makes the settling possible without it becoming a fight. Patience for what genuinely needs patience, and honesty for what's actually fixable this week, can coexist without one canceling the other.

Name the one unsettled professional matter that's been sitting longest right now. Take a real step toward resolving it this week, rather than adding it to a growing list of things you're quietly enduring.

A list like that only grows heavier with time. Nothing on it gets easier to address by waiting, and most of it was resolvable in a single honest conversation from the very beginning.

Lord, give me the patience to bear what needs bearing, and the honesty to settle what's actually fixable, without confusing the two. Amen.
