God calls the rebellious back during their rebellion - not after the turning is complete. The invitation is extended into the middle of the departure. One from a city, two from a clan. The gathering is individual and specific, not categorical. The mourning turned to joy is not a general spiritual principle but a concrete promise to a particular people in a particular mess.

The thorny soil is the most uncomfortable of the four because it describes someone who is not antagonistic to the faith, who has not made a decision to leave, who hears the word and receives it - and then slowly, without a moment of crisis, gets crowded out. The anxiety and the lure are ordinary. In the years of building a life, they are everywhere. The question is not whether they are present. It is whether they are given more space than the word.

Both readings are describing the same thing from different angles: the thing meant to be close - garment to body, word to heart - that drifted through inattention rather than rejection. The remedy Jeremiah names is not complicated: return. The gathering will happen. The mourning will turn. But the return has to begin somewhere.

Name your specific thorns. Not in the abstract - the actual anxieties and the actual lures that have been taking up space in your interior life lately. What would it mean to give the word more room than them this week?

Lord, I have received what you planted. Do not let me be the thorny soil. Gather me one from the city. Turn whatever mourning I am carrying into the joy you promised. Precious Blood of Jesus, save us. Amen.
