Ecclesiastes' list of fourteen pairs includes one most professional advice quietly ignores: a time to tear down, and a time to build. Most career guidance treats building as the only legitimate mode - always be growing, always be scaling, always adding rather than subtracting. The text assumes something more realistic: that building at the wrong time is as much a mistake as failing to build at the right one, and that knowing which season you're actually in matters more than defaulting to the mode that feels productive.

The same logic applies to "a time to keep, and a time to cast away." A role, a project, a way of working that served you well for years can become the wrong thing to keep holding onto, and the discomfort of that recognition is usually what keeps people in outgrown positions long after the actual season for them has passed. Ecclesiastes doesn't moralize about which half of the pair is better. It insists that discernment about timing is the actual skill, more than commitment to either mode as a permanent identity.

The Gospel's question cuts closer to what any of that pacing is actually for. Jesus asks who people say he is, gets the crowd's secondhand answers, and then asks Peter directly: but who do you say that I am? Applied to a career, ask its version honestly: are your current professional choices built on your own considered answer to what actually matters, or on secondhand assumptions about what a good career is supposed to look like at this stage?

Identify one thing in your current work you've been keeping mainly out of habit or sunk cost, past the point it was actually serving you. Name specifically what season you're actually in with it - keep, or cast away - rather than defaulting to keep because it's familiar.

Lord, I default to building and keeping because that feels like progress. Teach me to discern the actual season instead of running the same mode regardless of what it requires. Amen.
