Yesterday's Reflection

The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day)

Reflection

Wisdom's claim tonight is unambiguous: the souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them. Read that outside the frame of personal consolation for a moment, and ask what it implies about legacy - not the kind measured in title or tenure, but the kind that actually survives a person's departure from an organization that will, eventually, forget most of what they did there.

Careers are structured to make forgetting feel like failure. A predecessor's work gets absorbed, restructured, rebranded, and within a few years the org chart shows no trace that they were ever the reason something worked. Wisdom's answer isn't that the erasure doesn't happen. It's that the erasure isn't the final account. What actually mattered about a person's work was never fully visible on the org chart to begin with.

Tonight opens a practice that will run the rest of the month: a list, kept somewhere private, of people who shaped your professional formation and have since died - a mentor, a former boss, a colleague who taught you something you still use. Add names to it through November. The discipline of naming someone specifically, rather than gesturing vaguely at "everyone who came before," is itself a form of the accounting Wisdom describes: paying attention to a particular person's actual contribution, not letting it dissolve into the generic past.

The Challenge

Start a private list tonight of people, now deceased, who shaped how you actually work. Write down one specific thing each of them taught you, not just their name.

One Prayer

Lord, hold the people who formed me and are gone now. Let what they gave me outlast the institutions that have already forgotten them. Amen.
