Yesterday's Reflection

Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord

Reflection

Daniel's vision and Peter's testimony are arriving at the same event from opposite directions - Daniel seeing the end of the story, the Ancient One on his throne and the Son of Man receiving the dominion that will not be destroyed; Peter standing at the beginning of that same story, on a mountain in Galilee, while his friend's face shone like the sun.

Peter's insistence is pointed: we did not follow cleverly devised myths. We were eyewitnesses. We heard the voice. He is making an epistemological claim, not a devotional one. His letter is addressed to people who have not been on the mountain and who are going to have to hold what he holds without the direct experience he had. The prophetic word, he says - the testimony handed on, the Scripture, the tradition - is like a lamp shining in a dark place. Not the full light. A lamp. Reliable until the day comes.

Peter was still talking when the cloud interrupted him. His tent-building plan, whatever it was, was cut off mid-sentence. What replaced it: the voice from the cloud, the prostration, the touch, the standing up, the looking up to see only Jesus.

The structural movement of the story goes from many - Moses, Elijah, the cloud, the brightness, all the extraordinary things - to one: Jesus alone. Everything extraordinary passes and Jesus is standing there, having already touched the terrified disciples and told them to rise.

The early adult years carry their own version of the tent-building instinct - the impulse to manage the overwhelming thing by constructing something around it, by making it permanent, by turning the moment of encounter into a project. The Transfiguration story's implicit comment on Peter is gentle but clear: the cloud will come while you are still talking. What matters is what you see when you look up afterward.

The Challenge

What is the extraordinary experience of God you have been building a tent around - trying to manage or preserve or turn into a system - rather than simply carrying as testimony? Name it. Let it be what Peter's was: something real that happened, that you were present for, that you can say without embarrassment: it was not a myth.

One Prayer

Lord, when the cloud passes and the extraordinary things are gone, let me see only you alone. And let me be an eyewitness who carries what I know through the lamp-time without turning it into a management project. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us. Amen.
