Yesterday's Reflection

Friday of the Fifth Week of Easter

Reflection

The Jerusalem Council sends its letter with living people alongside it - Judas and Silas go in person, to speak the same message by word of mouth. The written decision needs embodied witnesses. And when Antioch receives it, the response is delight. Not compliance. Not relief. The community reads the letter and is glad - genuinely glad that the burden is lifted and the decision is clear.

Jesus says: I no longer call you slaves. A slave does not know what the master is doing. I call you friends, because I have told you everything I heard from my Father. This is one of the most significant things Jesus says in the whole Gospel - the reclassification from slave to friend based on full disclosure. You are not being kept in managed ignorance, told what to do without the why. You have been let in on everything. That is the relationship being offered.

It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you. In your twenties, when the faith can feel like a series of choices you are responsible for maintaining, this sentence reorients the whole thing. The initiative was his. Your response matters - the commandment is still love one another, which is not passive - but the foundation of the relationship is his choosing, not your worthiness. That cannot be taken from you by a season of doubt or a period of distance.

The Challenge

The letter in today's reading was carried by living people, not just sent on paper. What is one thing you believe - about the faith, about what God has done in your life - that you have been keeping to yourself rather than carrying to someone who needs to hear it? Be a living voice this week. The word needs people who will say it, not just know it.

One Prayer

Lord, you called me friend and told me everything. Help me live from that friendship rather than from fear of not being chosen. And help me carry what I know to someone who needs to hear it. Alleluia. Amen.
