Monday of the Twenty-third Week in Ordinary Time

"Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?" - Luke 6:9

Brother, Jesus asks his question in front of an audience specifically hoping he'll get it wrong. The scribes and Pharisees aren't neutral observers - they're watching closely to find a reason to accuse him. He heals the man's hand anyway, in full view, knowing exactly what it will cost him with that crowd.

Paul's charge in the first reading runs the other direction but asks for the same kind of courage. Something serious was being tolerated in the Corinthian community, and instead of dealing with it, the people there had gotten proud of how accommodating they'd become. A little yeast leavens all the dough, Paul tells them. Whatever a man lets slide in his own house or his own life doesn't stay contained. It works through everything eventually.

Picture the specific, small version of this rather than the general one. A joke that goes a little too far and nobody calls it out, so it becomes the joke you make every time. A late payment or a cut corner at work that nobody notices, so it becomes the standard instead of the exception. None of it announces itself as a crisis on the day it starts. It just becomes easier the second time than the first, and easier again after that.

Both readings ask for the same thing from different directions: do the right thing regardless of who's watching, and don't let something wrong sit unaddressed because confronting it feels harder than tolerating it. Neither one is comfortable. Both are what a steward actually does with what's entrusted to him.

Name one thing you've been letting slide - in your own habits, or in your household - because addressing it felt like more trouble than it was worth. Don't wait for the big version of it to show up before you deal with it; the whole point of today's readings is that it never announces itself that clearly. Take one concrete step on it today, and tell another man what the step was.

Lord, you healed in front of people hoping you'd fail. Give me that same willingness to do right regardless of who's watching or what it costs me. And show me what I've let slide that needs clearing out before it works through everything else. Amen.
