Yesterday's Reflection

Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Reading

"The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted." - Matthew 23:11-12

Reflection

Ezekiel sees the glory returning to the temple - coming from the east, the earth shining with it, filling the inner court. God says: this is where my throne is, where I will place the foot of my feet. The glory returns to the house that received it. Mary received the Word and called herself the handmaid of the Lord. Today she wears the crown.

Jesus's warning in Matthew 23 is specific: the scribes and Pharisees widen their phylacteries, take the best seats, love being called Rabbi. Everything they do is to be seen. As for you - different. The greatest is the servant. The man who understands the Queenship of Mary has understood what kingdom greatness looks like.

Brother, where are you seeking the Pharisee's reward - visibility, position, the right recognition? Name it honestly, not as condemnation but as honest accounting. The servant-queen refused to reach for the crown. It came to her. The man who builds his life on the servant's role rather than the performer's gets the thing the performer never reaches.

The Challenge

Name one specific place where you are widening your phylacteries - performing the good thing rather than doing it, seeking the visible rather than the real. Name it. Then name the servant-movement that takes its place: the thing done when no one is watching, for the people who won't thank you. Tell another man what you are practicing this week in the hidden place.

One Prayer

Mary, servant-queen, your greatness came from the service given without seeking the crown. I want what comes that way. Pray for me on your feast that I would find the joy of the servant's role - in my home, in my ministry, in the places where no one is watching. Whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Let that promise be mine. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us. Amen.
