"Settle the matter on the way." - Luke 12:58
Reflection
Jesus points at the sky. A cloud in the west, and you know rain is coming. Wind from the south, and you call the heat before it arrives. You read the weather without effort. Then he asks why the same men can't read the moment they're standing in.
The moment he means is a debt. Settle with your opponent on the way to court, he says, or you'll pay the last penny before it's over. It's a hard, practical line dropped into the middle of a passage about fire and division. Some things get worse the longer you leave them unsettled, brother, and a man who's good at reading clouds can be terrible at reading his own unfinished business.
A steward settles what he can settle today rather than carrying it forward as debt.
Paul's first reading gives the gentler half of it. Bear with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace. Bearing with someone and settling a debt with someone aren't opposites. A man can hold patience for what needs patience and still walk across the room to fix what's actually fixable.
The Challenge
Name one unsettled matter you've been carrying like a debt: an apology owed, a conversation avoided, a small wrong never named. Choose the sacrifice, then choose the person. Say his name or hers when you give up the comfort today, and take one step toward settling the matter before the weekend.
One Prayer
I read the sky better than I read my own debts, Lord. Give me the courage to settle what's mine to settle. Amen.
