"He has made everything appropriate to its time." - Ecclesiastes 3:11

Brother, Ecclesiastes gives you fourteen pairs today, and a steward's actual skill is buried in the structure of the list, not in any single line. A time to build, a time to tear down. A time to keep, a time to cast away. A time to speak, a time to be silent. The list isn't telling you which half of each pair is good and which is bad. It's telling you that discernment - knowing which half applies right now - is the entire job.

That's harder than it sounds for a man used to having one default mode. Some men default to building even when the actual moment calls for tearing something down first. Some men default to keeping everything, out of a fear of casting anything away, even when holding on has stopped serving anyone. A steward who only knows how to do one half of each pair isn't actually stewarding. He's just running the same program regardless of what the field in front of him actually requires.

Peter gets the answer right in today's Gospel - who do you say that I am - and gets it right immediately, without hedging. The Christ of God. But Jesus's very next words tell him what season that answer is walking him into: suffering, rejection, death, and only after all of that, resurrection. Peter said yes to the right thing and got handed the hard season that comes with it, not a reward for saying it correctly. A steward who confesses Christ rightly doesn't get to skip to the easy pairs on the list. He gets handed whichever one is actually next.

Name which half of one of today's pairs you've been avoiding - tearing down something that needs it, speaking when you've been staying silent, casting away something you've been keeping past its time. Do the harder half this week, on purpose.

Lord, I default to the same mode regardless of what the season actually requires. Teach me to discern the time I'm actually in, and give me Peter's willingness to say the right thing even when it walks me straight into the harder season. Amen.
