Yesterday's Reflection

The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day)

The Reading

"The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them." - Wisdom 3:1

Reflection

Every steward's account eventually closes. Tonight, brother, is the night the Church sets aside on purpose to say so plainly, without softening it. The souls of the just are in the hand of God. Not almost there. Not on their way. Held, now, by someone who does not drop what he holds.

Wisdom names the temptation directly: to the foolish, the dead seem simply gone, their passing an affliction, their going forth destruction. That reading is available to any man who has stood at a graveside and felt the finality of the dirt. Wisdom does not deny the grief. It denies the conclusion. What looks like an ending, to eyes that only measure what's in front of them, is a testing, like gold proved in a furnace, and the ones who pass through it are found worthy of the one who tested them.

Paul's second reading pushes further than comfort. Baptized into Christ, we were baptized into his death, buried with him, so that we might walk in newness of life. A steward does not manage his own account into eternity by his own effort. He was already buried once, sacramentally, and the rising that follows is not something he arranges. It is something done to him.

Jesus closes the day with the plainest promise in the readings: this is the will of my Father, that everyone who believes in the Son should have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day. Tonight, name someone you have lost, out loud, and hand their account to the one who is actually keeping it.

The Challenge

Open a small notebook tonight - a real one, kept somewhere you'll see it the rest of the month. Write the name of one person who has died. Say aloud: "Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him." Add a name most nights through the month, not only tonight.

One Prayer

Lord, you hold the souls of the just in your hand, and no torment touches them there. Hold the ones I name tonight, and hold me too, when my own account comes due. Amen.
