On that day I will raise up the fallen hut of David; I will wall up its breaches, raise up its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old. - Amos 9:11
Reflection
The book of Amos ends here. The prophet who said the Lord abhors the feasts, who brought upheaval like Sodom, who called Israel to prepare to meet their God - this prophet ends with the raising of the fallen hut. The severity was not the final word. The restoration is.
I will raise up the fallen hut of David. Not the restored palace - the hut. The ruins, the breaches, the rubble. The Lord will start with what is fallen and rebuild from there. That is the specific promise.
Can the wedding guests mourn while the bridegroom is with them? The Amos restoration and the Jesus bridegroom belong together: the on-that-day is present in the presence of the bridegroom. The fasting will come. But the present moment is the time of the new wine that requires new wineskins.
The Challenge
What is the fallen hut in your life that needs the promise of on-that-day? Name the specific ruin, the specific breach. Receive the promise over it: I will raise it up. I will wall up its breaches. Never again shall it be plucked. And carry [name]: Lord, raise the fallen hut of his life. Wall up the breaches. Give him the new wineskins for what you are pouring in this season.
One Prayer
Lord, I will raise up the fallen hut. Let me receive that promise over the specific ruin. And let me receive the new wine into fresh wineskins. Precious Blood of Jesus, I trust in you. Amen.
