Hezekiah took the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; then he went up to the temple of the LORD, and spreading it out before him, he prayed. - 2 Kings 19:14
Reflection
Hezekiah read the letter. He didn't pretend it wasn't threatening. He didn't suppress the fear. He took it to the temple and spread it on the floor in front of the Lord. The prayer that followed is one of the greatest in all of Scripture: O Lord, you alone are God over all kingdoms. You made heaven and earth. Incline your ear. Open your eyes. See what Sennacherib has written to taunt the living God.
Save us - not for our sake but so that all kingdoms may know that you alone are God. The purpose of the deliverance is the testimony. The 185,000 dead by morning is not just a military victory. It is a declaration that the living God is not like the gods of wood and stone.
How narrow the gate. Few find it. The man who has been walking the narrow road knows it in his body - the places it diverged from the wide one, what it cost to stay on it. The narrow road does not promise ease. It promises life.
The Challenge
Name the Sennacherib-letter in your life right now - the specific taunt that says your God cannot save you in this situation. Take it to the Lord in actual prayer this week: spread it before him, ask him to incline his ear and open his eyes. The prayer is not magic. But the God who heard Hezekiah hears you. And carry [name]: Lord, let him spread the letter before you. Save him so that the kingdoms around him may know that you alone are God.
One Prayer
Lord, open your eyes and see. Incline your ear and listen. You alone are God over every kingdom this letter represents. Save me - not for my sake alone but so those around me may know it is you. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in you. Amen.
