"Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." - Matthew 16:25

Jesus says this immediately after telling his disciples he is going to Jerusalem to die. He is not speaking abstractly. He has just named the cost and he is asking whether they are in.

Nahum's oracle gives you the alternative. Nineveh accumulated everything - power, plunder, dominion over other nations. Woe to the bloody city, full of lies. By the end of the oracle, it is a heap of corpses. Everything built on the principle that accumulation was the point, and it came to nothing that lasted.

Every man builds his version of Nineveh. The project, the reputation, the security structure, the thing he has spent years constructing that is his. Not all of it is wrong. But the question is whether the building is happening instead of following, or alongside it.

Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Jesus says this as a fact, not a hope. He said it, went to Jerusalem, died, and came back. The mechanics were demonstrated. The finding is real.

Brother, what are you still trying to save that is costing you the following? Name it. Then take up the specific cross that is actually yours - not the dramatic one you would choose, the actual daily one - and follow. Tell another man what the cross is. The man who carries his alone is more likely to set it down.

Name one thing you are protecting rather than losing - one place where the save-your-life instinct is operating. Then name the specific cross Jesus is asking you to take up in that situation. Carry it today. And tell one man what it is. The cross carried alone is harder to keep carrying.

Lord, I want to find my life, not save it. I know what the cross is. Help me pick it up and keep walking. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us. Amen.
