"What you sow does not come to life unless it dies." - 1 Corinthians 15:36

Brother, the Ember fast closes tonight, and this week's steward material closes with it on a specific note: what a faithful steward refuses to do is demand a harvest before it's time.

Paul's answer to how the dead are raised is a farmer's answer, not a philosopher's. A bare kernel goes into the ground and something unrecognizable comes back up - not repaired, transformed. Sown in weakness, raised in power. No steward who has ever planted anything expects to see results the week he plants them. He knows the seed has to disappear into the dark before anything visible happens, and he has to be at peace with that disappearance for a long stretch of time he doesn't control.

That's harder than it sounds when it's your own effort in the ground - the discipline you started with your kids that hasn't visibly changed anything yet, the patience you've been practicing at home that nobody has thanked you for, the version of yourself you've been quietly trying to become that still looks, most days, exactly like the old version. The sower in today's Gospel scatters the same seed on four different kinds of ground and doesn't get to control which one it lands on. He sows anyway. That's the job. Judging the harvest before the seed has even finished dying underground isn't stewardship. It's impatience dressed up as accountability.

Ember Saturday historically closed with an all-night vigil before dawn ordinations - men waiting through the dark for something that had been building toward this night for years, sometimes decades, before it became visible. That is what a steward actually signs up for: tending what was entrusted to him through a stretch of time where nothing appears to be happening, trusting that sown in weakness means something is coming, not that nothing is.

Name one thing you have been sowing - in your family, your work, your own character - that has produced no visible harvest yet. Instead of demanding a result this week, do the one small, ordinary act of tending it again, without needing to see anything for it.

Lord, I want to see the harvest before the seed has finished dying. Teach me to keep sowing in the dark, trusting that what is sown in weakness you intend to raise in power. Amen.
