Yesterday's Reflection

Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Reading

"Are you envious because I am generous?" - Matthew 20:15

Reflection

Brother, this parable opens a new stretch of this month's material, and it names directly what a faithful steward refuses.

A landowner hires men in five waves across a single day - dawn, nine, noon, three, five in the afternoon - and pays every one of them the same wage at the end of it. The men who worked from dawn are furious, and their math is not wrong. They worked twelve hours. The last crew worked one. Equal pay looks like an insult to the effort of the men who put in the full day. The landowner's answer does not dispute the math. He asks a different question entirely: are you envious because I am generous? The Greek behind that word for envious is an idiom about the evil eye - a way of looking at someone else's good fortune that turns it into your own grievance.

That is the refusal this week names outright. A steward manages what he has been given - his time, his labor, his position, his years of faithfulness - and he is entitled to expect it will be honored. What he is not entitled to do is start auditing what someone else received and calling the auditing justice. The workers hired at five o'clock did not take anything from the men hired at dawn. The full wage paid to the twelve-hour men was never in dispute. What ruined their day was a decision to measure their own blessing against someone else's instead of just receiving it.

Every man reading this has a version of the five o'clock worker in his own life - a brother who wasted twenty years and came home to open arms, a colleague who got the promotion after two years that took you ten, a man at your parish who showed up to faith late and gets treated like a hero for doing what you've quietly done all along without applause. Isaiah's reading underneath it all: my ways are not your ways, my thoughts not your thoughts. A steward faithful with what he's actually been given refuses to spend that faithfulness auditing somebody else's.

The Challenge

Name the specific person whose good fortune you have been quietly resenting - who got something you worked longer for, or received grace you think they arrived at too easily. Do one deliberate thing this week to be glad for them, out loud, where they can hear it.

One Prayer

Lord, I have measured your generosity to others against my own effort more times than I can count. Take the evil eye out of me. Let me receive what I am given without auditing what someone else received. Amen.
