Sunday's Reflection — Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

1 Kgs 19:9a, 11-13a; Ps 85:9-14; Rom 9:1-5; Mt 14:22-33

Elijah was hiding in a cave. He had just won the most spectacular victory of his life - fire from heaven on Mount Carmel, four hundred and fifty false prophets defeated - and now Jezebel wanted him dead and he had run into the desert to die. God fed him and told him to get up and walk. And here he was at Horeb, in a cave, waiting.

God told him to stand at the entrance. A great wind came, strong enough to break rocks. God was not in the wind. Then an earthquake. God was not in the earthquake. Then fire. God was not in the fire.

Then a tiny whispering sound. Elijah wrapped his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.

That is where God was.

Peter tried to walk on water and nearly drowned. The disciples sat in a boat in the dark and thought they were seeing a ghost. And when the whole thing was over - when Jesus was in the boat and the wind had stopped and everyone was trying to catch their breath - they said something they had never quite said before: truly, you are the Son of God.

Not on the mountain. In the boat. After the sinking.

Universal Prayer

• For our family, that we would learn to hear the small voice after all the noise - in the ordinary days, in the quiet after the hard thing passes, we pray to the Lord.
• For the children in our family, that they would know God comes to them not only in the spectacular but in the whisper, we pray to the Lord.
• Under the Immaculate Heart of Mary - as we prepare for her Assumption this Saturday - for her example of hearing God in the ordinary and saying yes, we pray to the Lord.
• For those in our family sinking in something right now - that they would cry out before they go under and trust the hand that reaches immediately, we pray to the Lord.

Faith in Action

At dinner tonight: ask each person to share a time when they expected God to show up in a big dramatic way and instead something small happened. Or a time when a quiet, ordinary moment turned out to matter more than the big one.

Then read the Elijah verse together: after the fire, a tiny whispering sound. Ask: where is the tiny whispering sound in your life right now?

A Note for Parents

The spectacular thing rarely sustains faith over time. The pattern of small faithfulness does - the ordinary prayer, the daily small choice, the quiet voice you keep training your children to hear. That is the Horeb lesson.
