Dear Catholic Parents,

Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. Before their eyes his face shines like the sun and his clothes become white as light. Moses and Elijah appear. A bright cloud casts its shadow over them. From the cloud, a voice: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him" (Matthew 17:5). The disciples fall on their faces. When they look up, only Jesus is there. He touches them: "Rise, and do not be afraid." August 6 is the feast of his glory revealed - and the 81st anniversary of the day a different kind of light destroyed a city.

1. A Masked Man Smashed the Virgin Mary's Statue in Queens - the Fourth Attack in Two Years

At 1:42 in the morning on August 1, a masked man jumped a fence into the courtyard of St. Rita Roman Catholic Church in Long Island City, Queens, pulled a hammer from his shorts, and smashed the parish's statue of the Blessed Mother. The head broke off. He jumped back over the fence and walked away. The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating. No arrests have been made. It is the fourth act of vandalism targeting St. Rita's since 2024 - previous attacks destroyed a 60-year-old stained-glass window, damaged a statue of St. Jude inside the church, and defaced a statue of St. Francis. The Diocese of Brooklyn notes that hate crimes in New York City are up 9.4% this year. The USCCB has documented more than 400 acts of vandalism, arson, and other attacks on Catholic sites in the United States since 2020.

Faith Lens for the Home: On the feast when the disciples fell on their faces at the brightness of God - a man with a hammer smashed the image of his mother in the dark. These things belong in the same sentence. Ask your family: "What does it mean to honor sacred images - not to worship them, but to treat them as windows into something real? And what does it say about our culture when those windows keep getting smashed?" Pray for the parish of St. Rita in Long Island City. Pray for whoever is doing this - that something in them might one day fall on its face before what is truly bright.

2. Glenn Youngkin Launches National School Choice Campaign for 20 Holdout States

Former Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin unveiled "Empowering America's Parents" yesterday - a new policy organization that will run a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign pressuring 20 states whose governors have not yet opted into the Education Freedom Tax Credit. The EFTC, part of last year's One Big Beautiful Bill Act and effective January 2027, allows taxpayers to donate up to $1,700 to scholarship-granting organizations in participating states, funding private school tuition, tutoring, and disability services for K-12 students. Thirty states have opted in; the four primary targets for the campaign are Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin - all led by Democratic governors. Around 90% of K-12 students would be eligible if all states participated.

Faith Lens for the Home: The Church has taught for more than a century that parents are the primary educators of their children - not the state. The Education Freedom Tax Credit is one of the most significant federal expansions of parental choice in education in American history. Ask your family: "Do we know what this program means for our state, and whether our governor has opted in? And what would we do with a scholarship if we had one?" The voice from the cloud says: listen to him. One of the things he says, through the Church, is that children belong to their families first.

3. August 6: The Transfiguration and Hiroshima on the Same Day

Eighty-one years ago today, the United States dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Approximately 140,000 people were killed by the end of 1945. August 6 has been the feast of the Transfiguration since the 15th century - Pope Callixtus III added it to the universal calendar in 1457 after news arrived of a victory over the Ottomans at Belgrade, which happened to fall on the day already observed as the Transfiguration in parts of the Church. The two kinds of light have shared this date ever since: the light that reveals the Son of God, and the light that turned a city to ash. The Church's position on nuclear weapons has not changed since Hiroshima: every act of war directed at indiscriminate destruction of populations is a crime against God and man. Pope Leo XIV addressed this directly in Magnifica Humanitas this summer.

Faith Lens for the Home: "Rise, and do not be afraid." Jesus says this to the disciples after the glory passes - after the voice from the cloud, after they fall on their faces. On the anniversary of Hiroshima, it is still the word the Church offers to a world that knows what it is capable of building. Ask your family: "What does the Church teach about nuclear weapons - and why does that teaching matter to a family in my city?" The answer is that every human life is sacred. Including the ones in Hiroshima. Including the ones in Tehran. This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.

The Transfiguration of the Lord - August 6

A moment on Mount Tabor when Jesus revealed his divine glory to three disciples who would soon see him endure his passion. Peter wanted to build tents and stay. The voice from the cloud redirected him: listen. When they looked up, only Jesus remained. The Transfiguration is the Church's reminder that the one who went to the cross is also the one whose face shines like the sun - and that the glory is not separate from the suffering but its destination. "He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all - how will he not also give us everything else along with him?" (Romans 8:32, Sunday's second reading).

Ask at dinner: "The disciples fell on their faces when they heard the voice from the cloud. When was the last time our family encountered something about God that genuinely stopped us - that we couldn't explain away or move past quickly? What was it?"

✋ One Simple Action

Pray tonight for the parish of St. Rita in Long Island City - for the pastor and parishioners who keep coming back despite four attacks in two years. Pray for the soul of every person killed at Hiroshima 81 years ago today. And say the voice's words as a family prayer before bed: "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him."
