"For to me life is Christ, and death is gain." - Philippians 1:21

Sister, no sorrow is assigned today - the devotion holds its own rhythm this week, and today the readings speak on their own.

Start with the workers hired at five in the afternoon. They worked one hour and were paid a full day's wage, and the men who had been in the field since dawn were furious about it. There is a version of this scene that plays out quietly in a lot of households and parishes: the person who has been faithfully present for years, doing the unglamorous daily work nobody notices, watches someone newer receive the same warmth, the same welcome, the same grace, after showing up late. It stings in a specific way that is hard to admit out loud, because the sting comes from something that sounds ugly when named plainly: resentment at someone else's forgiveness.

The landowner's answer does not deny that the twelve-hour workers earned their wage. It asks a different question: are you envious because I am generous? That word for envious, in the Greek, is an idiom about the evil eye - a way of seeing that turns someone else's good fortune into your own injury. Isaiah gives the reason this economy runs the way it does: my thoughts are not your thoughts, my ways not your ways. God's generosity toward someone who arrived late was never a subtraction from what he owes you for arriving early. It only feels that way when the math is done wrong.

Paul's reading gives you the deeper ground underneath all of it. For to me life is Christ, and death is gain. He is not comparing his worth to anyone else's. His whole identity has stopped being measured against other people's timelines, other people's hours in the field, other people's late or early arrivals. If the years you have given - to your family, to your faith, to people who took a long time to appreciate it - have started to feel like hours logged against a wage you're owed, tonight is a good night to set the ledger down and remember what Paul actually says life is for.

Name one person whose late arrival - to faith, to your family, to being the person you needed them to be - has quietly bothered you, even though you would never say so out loud. Pray for them by name tonight, specifically thanking God for the grace they received rather than measuring it against your own years.

Lord, I have kept a ledger on people who arrived late to grace, as if their welcome cost me something. Teach me that your generosity to them was never a subtraction from what you have given me. For me, let life be Christ, not the math. Amen.
