Yesterday's Reflection

Friday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time

The Reading

"The one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus." - Philippians 1:6

Reflection

Paul writes today with real confidence, Sister: the one who began a good work in you will finish it. Not a warning to complete it yourself before it's too late. Confidence that the finishing was never entirely yours to guarantee in the first place.

You are being filled so that something can be set on the table.

Hear that plainly on the second-to-last night of a month spent asking what's actually been filling you. Whatever's still unfinished, whatever hasn't shown fruit yet despite real effort, the incompleteness itself isn't proof that nothing real happened this October. Today's Gospel shows Jesus healing on the Sabbath while religious leaders watch, waiting to catch him breaking a rule, and asks them plainly whether it's lawful. They say nothing, unwilling to admit something good was happening right in front of them.

Write down, honestly, one thing that actually grew in you this month, not what you wish had grown, what actually did. Let the answer be small if it needs to be.

Paul prays that love would increase in knowledge and every kind of perception, so that the Philippians could discern what is of value. That's a fair prayer to close October with too: not more output, but clearer eyes for what actually mattered in the ordinary weeks behind you.

The Challenge

Write one honest sentence naming what genuinely grew in you this October. Keep it somewhere you'll actually see it again, not buried in a drawer or a notes app you never reopen.

One Prayer

Lord, finish what you started in me, even the parts I can't see clearly yet. Give me confidence instead of anxiety about what's unfinished. Amen.
