The Reading

"Go and learn the meaning of the words, I desire mercy, not sacrifice." - Matthew 9:13

Reflection

Sister, no sorrow is assigned to today - the feast speaks on its own, and it speaks a sentence that deserves more than a nod: I desire mercy, not sacrifice.

That line is aimed at people who already believe sacrifice is the point - the ones doing the sacrificing, quietly, for years, and measuring their own worth by how much of it they've given. If that describes any part of your life, hear the correction plainly. Jesus is not telling the Pharisees to stop caring about righteousness. He is telling them they have the order backwards. Mercy is not the reward for enough sacrifice. Mercy is what all the sacrifice was supposed to be in service of, and when the sacrifice starts existing for its own sake, something has gone wrong even when the sacrifice itself looks impressive.

Matthew's dinner is the enactment of that correction. He throws a party for the only friends he actually has - other tax collectors, other people the respectable world had already dismissed - and Jesus goes. Not because Matthew had proven himself through some period of sacrifice first. The mercy came before any of that, at his desk, in the middle of an ordinary workday, with nothing earned yet.

Paul's reading gives you the practical form mercy takes in an actual household or community: bearing with one another through love, with all humility and gentleness, with patience. Notice these are not dramatic, one-time sacrifices. They are the small, repeated, unglamorous mercies that hold a family or a friendship together - the kind that rarely get noticed because they don't look like sacrifice. They look like simply choosing mercy again, in an ordinary moment, for the hundredth time.

The Challenge

Think of one person you have been extending sacrifice to - effort, service, dutiful care - without much mercy alongside it. Today, offer that same person something gentler: patience instead of correction, presence instead of another task done for them.

One Prayer

Lord, I have sometimes confused sacrifice with love, giving more of myself while giving less mercy. Teach me what you meant - mercy first, and let the sacrifice follow from it rather than replace it. Amen.
