Reflection
Mary called herself the handmaid of the Lord. The Magnificat she sang before anyone else could see what she was carrying is still her testimony: he has looked with favor on his lowly servant; he has cast down the mighty and lifted up the lowly. The Queenship is the Magnificat made visible. She sang the promise, lived the promise, and received the promise.
Ezekiel sees the glory filling the temple and God saying: this is where my throne is, where I will dwell forever. The glory returns to the house that received it without claiming credit. Mary received the Word and made no claim on the receiving. The glory passed through her to the world.
The Pharisee's religion performs to be seen. The servant-queen's manner receives and gives away without advertising the transaction. Many women know the gap between these two from the inside - the work done that is not noticed, the burden carried that no one acknowledges, the giving that does not get named. The servant-queen's feast says: he sees. The lifting up is real. It just does not come from the places that advertise themselves.
Sister, what are you carrying today in the servant's role - the thing done quietly, the burden lifted without credit? Name it before God today. The feast says: he sees this too. Whoever humbles herself will be exalted.
The Challenge
Where in your life is the servant's work happening without being seen? Name it - the specific thing, done in the hidden place, for the people who don't always thank you. Bring it to Mary's feast today. She knows what you are carrying. She wore the crown because of this kind of giving.
One Prayer
Mary, Queen and handmaid, I crown your image today with a small crown because you wore the large one by refusing to seek it. Teach me your manner: to receive the glory and give it away, to call myself the servant of what I have been given, to wait for the exaltation that comes from the humbling rather than seeking it on my own. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us. Amen.
